How. Whatever it takes ... and then some. Who is Amara? Home Page Amara Grimes Design originally began in Los Angeles in 1989 out of a rented duplex in West Hollywood near La Brea and Wilshire. Partners Bob Grimes and Janice "Amara" Grimes were both founders and principal designers. Amara was a nom de plume Janice had adopted earlier as an aspiring illustrator of children's books. They chose to keep it for the company name.

Shortly after they moved their growing business to Pasadena in 1991, Janice left the studio to raise their two daughters and pursue other interests. The name remained given Janice's initial contributions to the business and occasional contributions thereafter. Although her professional alias became a permanent part of the brand, Janice departed from the studio in 2010.
